CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – There maybe plans for low income housing to come to an affluent part of the city.
City leaders say piece of land in Ballantyne, possibly off in the off Johnston Road may be rezoned to allow possible Section 8 housing to come to South Charlotte.
The Charlotte Housing Authority says it is aggressively looking for land in areas like Ballantyne to build affordable housing.
The belief is this will give parents, who can’t afford to live in Ballantyne, an opportunity to buy a home there and send their children to high performing schools.
Charlotte – Mecklenburg school board member Kaye McGarry says not so fast. She believes less government should be involved in living arrangements and more effort should go into making each school great.
"That’s where the time and energy should be put," she said. "Rather than to shuffle people around thinking that there’s a panacea. This is the answer."
City Councilman Warren Cooksey represents the Ballantyne area. He says he will talk to the authority very soon to get more information.
